Getting garden furniture ready for winter begins with cleaning, drying it completely, and determining for each material what can stay outside, what should go inside, and whether a cover is suitable. Also check during the winter that the furniture and cushions remain dry. A protective agent or cover does not replace the maintenance advice for your garden set.
The last long evening on the patio has passed. Before you put away the cushions and leave the garden set for months, this is a good moment to tackle dirt, moisture, and minor points of attention. An organized autumn cleanup helps you start the spring with a clean set. With this checklist, you can plan the work in a logical sequence.
When should you winterize your garden furniture?
Start when you are using the garden set less frequently for a longer period and you have sufficient opportunity to clean and dry it. In the Netherlands, this often takes place in the autumn, but the weather and the prescribed product conditions determine the workday. Don't wait until you want to hastily shove everything under a cover on a wet afternoon.
First, take a tour around the set. Which materials make up the tabletop, frame, seating, and cushions? Look up the maintenance information and see if the manufacturer allows indoor storage or leaving it outside. Also, check the required drying time for any potential treatment. If that requires multiple steps, plan those in advance.
Have a suitable cleaning agent, soft tools, clean water, and any workspace protection ready. Set aside cushions and loose accessories. Look at your storage space and cover before you start: you want to know where all the components can be stored dry after cleaning. Check whether bottles of maintenance product themselves need to be stored frost-free.
Winterizing your garden set in five steps
1. Remove loose dirt and clean by component
Remove leaves, crumbs, and other loose dirt. Then treat each component with an agent and tool that matches the material and finish. A teak top and a powder-coated frame do not necessarily need the same treatment. Protect adjacent parts and test a chosen agent on an inconspicuous area first.
Rinse or wipe down as indicated by the instructions. Pay attention to crevices, joints, and the underside. If there is a green haze, look at the route for cleaning green algae from garden furniture. Choose an agent based on suitability for the furniture and application, without creating a stronger mix on your own initiative.
2. Give furniture and cushions time to dry completely
Check more than just the visible tabletop. Moisture can remain around seams, between wicker, on the underside, or in the cushion filling. Follow the drying advice for the furniture. Applying a cover or closing a box while parts are still wet does not complete the drying step.
If you cannot achieve the desired drying conditions, adjust your planning. Do not clean just before leaving if no one can check on the condition of the set afterward. Let any protective product also dry according to its own instructions before use or exposure to the weather.
3. Choose a protection step that matches the material
Determine whether re-treatment is necessary and what result you want. With teak, color maintenance and transparent water- and dirt-repellent protection are different choices. For HPL, ceramic, plastic, and textiles, other products and preparations apply. There is no single bottle that you should apply as a general winter coat over the entire lounge set.
Follow the label and furniture advice for every treatment. A protector does not repair a broken coating, a loose joint, or a torn thread. Record such issues separately and seek repair advice if necessary before putting the set away for months.
4. Store loose cushions and accessories appropriately
Check the cover and filling for complete dryness and choose a suitable dry storage location. Look at what the storage bag or box can actually handle: is it intended for indoor use and how is moisture kept out? A cushion bag is not automatically a winter-resistant outdoor storage solution. Check the contents periodically during long-term storage.
It is better to assess stains or a musty odor before putting the cushions away. In cleaning, washing, and drying garden cushions you will find the choices for cover, filling, and local stain treatment. For other accessories, follow their own storage instructions.
5. Choose the winter setup and agree on an inspection
Decide based on the product information which furniture can go inside and which may stay outside. For outdoor storage, choose a stable setup according to the furniture advice. Use a cover only if it is suitable and allowed. Check the fastening and prevent water from accumulating according to the cover advice.
Plan an occasional check during the winter, especially after prolonged wet or stormy weather. Look at dirt, moisture, the fit of the cover, and the stored cushions. Remove a cover if necessary to check and allow it to air out, according to the user instructions. A winter cleanup is a starting point for maintenance, not a reason to lose sight of the set for months.

Winter maintenance per material
Teak and other wooden parts
Distinguish between removing dirt and maintaining the desired wood color. Check a previous oil or color treatment before you start again. For cleaning a teak table or teak chairs, use the comprehensive step-by-step plan for cleaning teak. Let the wood dry completely for a suitable follow-up step.
A color protector does not automatically make a wooden garden set winter-resistant. Determine outdoor storage and covering based on the furniture manufacturer. If you want to know the difference between color maintenance and a transparent treatment, read Teak Protector or Teak Shield.
Aluminum, coating, and plastic
Check the finish and carefully remove dirt with permitted agents. When checking the frame, also pay attention to joints and any damage. Do not use a scouring pad or a random strong cleaner on an unknown coating. The maintenance route for aluminum and plastic helps you determine the material choice and treatment.
Rope and wicker
Soft rope, plastic wicker, and natural rattan are different materials. Adopt their maintenance and storage advice separately. Also check between the strands and around knots for dirt and moisture. In case of fraying, breakage, or loose joints, ask for repair advice first. Use the practical step-by-step plan for rope and wicker for cleaning and the appropriate follow-up choice.
Ceramic and HPL tabletops
Check the material and the finish of the top. A stone look does not tell you whether you are dealing with ceramic or HPL. Clean appropriately and follow the specific material route for any protection and outdoor storage. In maintaining ceramic and HPL tables, we explain the difference. Do not deduce frost resistance solely from the general material name.
Covering garden furniture or storing it indoors?
If you have a suitable dry indoor space, check how the set is allowed to stand there according to the furniture advice. Stack or disassemble parts only as permitted. Keep an eye on cushions and vulnerable surfaces. Storing indoors is primarily a conscious choice for the specific set, not a replacement for putting it away clean and dry.
A cover is not the right choice for every garden set. Check the covering advice for your furniture and use only a suitable cover if it is allowed. Pay attention to fit, fastening, and support, so that water does not accumulate. Through our maintenance guide per material, you will find the appropriate maintenance route for the components of your set.
Condensation can also form under a breathable cover due to temperature differences and humidity. Check the furniture regularly and follow the cover advice for airing and use. If you see moisture, examine the set, the cover, and the conditions together. Are you in doubt about winter storage? Ask for personal advice about your garden set.

Frequently asked questions about winterizing
Can garden furniture stay outside all winter?
That depends on the complete piece of furniture, the finish, and the manufacturer's instructions. The material name alone is insufficient. Look up the specific advice for the tabletop, frame, upholstery, and cushions, and then determine your storage choice.
Must a garden set always be covered?
No. First check if the furniture manufacturer advises covering and which cover is suitable for it. An unsuitable cover or incorrect use can cause moisture problems. Also, follow the cover's fit and ventilation instructions.
Can condensation form under a breathable protective cover?
Yes. A breathable cover does not completely rule out condensation. Temperature differences and humidity play a role. Check the set regularly and follow the cover advice for airing and use.
Can cushions stay in an outdoor box during the winter?
Check whether both the cushions and the box are intended for that storage. Only put away completely dry cushions and check that they remain dry. A bag or box is not a solution for wet filling. If in doubt, choose a suitable dry indoor place.
Do I have to re-treat teak every autumn?
Assess soiling, existing treatment, and desired appearance. Follow the maintenance frequency of the chosen product and the furniture advice. Applying extra layers without preparation is not a general winter instruction.
Does a protector prevent all green algae in the winter?
Do not assume such a guarantee. Use a product only for the application described by the manufacturer and the label. Remove dirt and leaves in time and check the furniture during the season.
What if the garden set is already wet under the cover?
Check the situation and follow the furniture and cover advice for airing and drying. Also pay attention to cushions and hard-to-reach parts. Afterward, store only clean and sufficiently dry material; ask for targeted advice in case of persistent moisture problems.
Are you in doubt about the combination of materials or the storage location? Provide the brand, model, finish, and a photo via contact and personal advice. Via the selection tool for garden furniture maintenance, you will then find the corresponding material advice.
