Maintaining rope and wicker: choose the right treatment

With rope and wicker, good maintenance starts with recognizing the material. Soft rope, synthetic wicker, and natural rattan do not automatically require the same treatment. Below, you can choose the right approach for cleaning, drying, and protecting. Want to get started right away? Use the practical step-by-step guide.

Step 1

Identify rope, synthetic wicker, and natural rattan

Rope is rope upholstery; synthetic wicker consists of synthetic wickerwork. Natural rattan is yet another type of material. The name wicker does not always describe what the furniture is made of. Therefore, check the material overview and maintenance advice from your supplier before choosing a product.

Golden Care lists rope under the Fabric products and synthetic wicker under Multi Surface. That is the starting point for this selection guide. For natural rattan and unknown coatings, follow the specific furniture advice. Treat the frame, the wickerwork, and the cushions as separate parts.

Step 2

Clean with the product suitable for the material

Remove cushions, leaves, and loose dirt. For synthetic wicker, you can choose Golden Care Multi Surface Cleaner if the furniture recommendations allow for its use. For rope, check the fabric instructions. Test any product on a small, inconspicuous area and use a suitable soft tool.

Follow the dosage and any indicated dwell time on your bottle. Do not assume a general dilution of 1:10. Rinse according to the product label and allow the material to dry thoroughly. For stubborn stains, ask for specific advice; using more product or leaving it on longer is not automatically the right solution.

Step 3

Choose protection by material

Use a protector on a clean and completely dry surface, provided the maintenance instructions allow for this treatment. For suitable rope, Golden Care Fabric Protector is the textile route. For synthetic wicker, you can choose an appropriate Multi Surface Protector; the Multi Surface Care Kit combines cleaning and protection.

Test the protector separately and follow the bottle label for application, even distribution, and drying. There is no fixed drying time or protection duration that applies to every type of wicker. A protector does not repair damaged fibers and is not a general guarantee against discoloration or green deposits. Also, check the current availability on the product page.

Step 4

Keep the wickerwork clean and allow moisture to escape.

Remove leaves and spilled food or drink in a timely manner according to the furniture advice. When cleaning, also check the underside, buttons, and joints. Do not pull on loose threads: in case of fraying, breaks, or loose weaving, ask the supplier for repair advice first.

Let the furniture dry thoroughly before storing or covering it. Follow your manufacturer's advice regarding leaving it outdoors and using a cover; ensure moisture does not become trapped. Check the protection after cleaning and during seasonal maintenance, instead of continuously applying a new layer without inspection.

Frequently asked questions about rope & wicker maintenance

Do I use the same product on rope and wicker?+

Not automatically. Golden Care lists rope under Fabric products and synthetic wicker under Multi Surface. Check the material, the finish, and the furniture maintenance advice. Natural rattan does not automatically fall under this synthetic category.

How do I tackle green or stubborn stains?+

First, check the material and the instructions for the specific type of soiling. Only use a suitable product according to the label and test it beforehand. Do not increase the concentration or exposure time on your own initiative. If the stain persists, ask the supplier for advice.

Which tool do I use on the wickerwork?+

Choose a soft cloth or brush permitted by the furniture care instructions. Work carefully around buttons and joints. Do not use a hard scouring pad or high-pressure cleaner as a substitute for careful manual cleaning.

Can rope and wicker be left outside in winter?+

That depends on the material composition and the advice of the furniture manufacturer. Allow the furniture to dry thoroughly before storing or covering it, and check under any covers for moisture. For natural rattan, follow the specific maintenance advice provided.

How often do I need to reapply protection?+

That depends on the product, exposure, and cleaning. During seasonal maintenance and after cleaning, check whether treatment is necessary and follow the label. Do not expect a fixed duration of protection for every piece of furniture.
