Cleaning rope and wicker starts with identifying the weave. For suitable textile rope, Golden Care describes the Fabric route; for synthetic wicker, choose a suitable cleaner for hard materials. Remove loose dirt, test the product, clean carefully, and rinse as prescribed. Make sure everything is thoroughly dry, including between the strands and at the joints.
A woven garden chair gives your terrace a light, open appearance. It is precisely within that weave that dust, crumbs, and leaves collect. Moreover, armrests are exposed to hands, spilled drinks, and sunscreen. With a calm approach, you can reach those spots without unnecessarily pulling on threads or knots. Below, you can read how to choose and execute the correct maintenance route.
Which weave does your garden furniture have?
Rope is used as a term for rope upholstery and can be constructed or finished differently per piece of furniture. Wicker describes woven material; for many garden furniture items, this involves synthetic strands. Natural rattan has its own maintenance advice. Therefore, a similar weave pattern does not mean that you can use the same bottle for every chair.
Look up the brand, model, and material details. See whether a protective finish has been applied and if you have used a cleaner or protector before. In addition, check the condition of the strands. If you see fraying, breaks, loose knots, or a damaged frame, ask for repair advice first. Cleaning and applying a new protective layer will not fix those issues.
Divide an assembled chair into parts: weave, frame, armrests, and loose cushions. For the cushions, there is an extensive blog on cleaning and washing garden cushions. You treat the metal frame according to the route for cleaning aluminum and synthetic garden furniture.
Prepare the workspace and the chair
Remove the cushions and clear away loose leaves and crumbs. For fragile weaves, use a soft tool approved by the furniture manufacturer. Do not let stubborn dirt be the reason to pry between the strands with a hard object. Protect the surface and have clean water and clean cloths ready.
- For suitable rope: an appropriate Fabric Cleaner 750 ml, for example from the Fabric Care Kit.
- For synthetic wicker: a suitable Multi Surface Cleaner.
- A soft sponge, cloth, or other approved tool with which you can reach the weave.
- Clean water for the prescribed preparation and rinsing.
- The personal protection and covering indicated on the bottle used.
Before a full treatment, perform a test on an inconspicuous area. Assess whether the product and the method match the color and finish. Choose a time when the furniture can also dry. For a chair with a tight weave and many joints, this requires more attention than a flat, open surface.
Cleaning rope garden furniture in five steps
1. Check the textile route and dampen the rope
The Dutch Golden Care instructions for textiles also mention rope as an application. For suitable rope, that route begins with testing for colorfastness and carefully dampening it with water. Check in advance if the furniture manufacturer allows this treatment. For an unknown finish, please contact the supplier first.
2. Apply Fabric Cleaner according to the label
The cleaner in these instructions is ready-to-use. Spray onto the prepared, wet material and work in manageable sections. Prevent spray mist from landing on cushions or other parts you do not wish to treat. This way, you can keep track of which areas have already been cleaned, per armrest, seat, or backrest.
3. Let it soak and clean with light pressure
The Dutch Fabric Cleaner instructions state an absorption time of three to ten minutes, depending on the soiling. The time on your own bottle remains leading. Clean carefully with the approved soft tool. Pay attention to crossings and knots, but do not pull the weave open to reach dirt better.
4. Rinse thoroughly
Rinse the treated material with clean water as described in the instructions. Also check the underside and the connections to the frame. A quick pass over just the visible front can leave dirt or cleaner between the strands. Repeat a treatment only as indicated on the packaging.
5. Let the entire weave dry
Give the thickest parts, wrappings, and knots time to dry as well. Determine the duration based on the material advice and conditions. A thread that feels dry on top of the armrest does not indicate the state of the seat or a dense joint. Only use a protector on completely dry, clean material.
Cleaning synthetic wicker: the route for hard materials
For suitable synthetic wicker, Golden Care mentions products such as Multi Surface Cleaner. Check the material application on the specific bottle. Do not automatically apply a product from the textile route to synthetic wicker, even if both chairs have the same pattern.
First, remove loose dirt and perform a test. The Dutch Multi Surface Cleaner instructions describe a ready-to-use agent that is applied directly, left to soak for three minutes, and then processed carefully with a suitable sponge. Afterwards, rinse with water. Follow the bottle and furniture instructions during your execution.
Work along the visible strands and also examine the places where they cross or touch the frame. Rinse away the loosened dirt. After drying, check whether the chair is clean before choosing a second cleaning or protection step. For the short route next to your workspace, you can open the step-by-step plan for rope and wicker.

Assessing stains and green deposits on weave
A dark spot can be caked-on dirt, a stain, or a change in the material. For persistent spots, note what might have caused them: for example, coffee, grease, or sunscreen. This allows you to ask for the right treatment. Applying more pressure or letting it soak longer is not a substitute for this assessment.
If you see a green haze, check first if your cleaner is intended for the combination of material and soiling. A cleaner for paving is not a general maintenance product for a woven garden chair. Do not mix products and do not adopt a bleach recipe intended for another material. The maintenance page on green deposits helps you choose a suitable route.
If the spot remains visible or a strand is damaged, stop treating it more and more intensely. Take a photo of the entire chair and a close-up of the spot. Also indicate which cleaning and previous protection you have used. That is a better starting point for advice than just the color of a stain.
Protecting and maintaining clean weave
For suitable rope, there is Fabric Protector 750 ml. This makes textile water- and dirt-repellent and helps prevent stains. Clean soiled material first, let it dry completely, and test the protector separately. Apply according to the bottle's own instructions and let this treatment dry completely before use as well.
For suitable synthetic wicker, you can choose Multi Surface Protector 750 ml. Always check if the protector matches the material and the finish. The Multi Surface Care Kit combines cleaning and protection for suitable hard surfaces. Check the contents and current availability on the product page. Follow the dosage and drying time on the bottles themselves; different protectors have different instructions.
During the season, remove leaves and crumbs and tackle spilled liquids in a timely manner according to the furniture advice. Before covering or storing for a longer period, check that the weave and cushions are dry. For a complete seasonal maintenance, use the preparing garden furniture for winter checklist.
Frequently asked questions about rope and wicker maintenance
What is the difference between rope and wicker when cleaning?
For suitable textile rope, Golden Care describes the Fabric route. Synthetic wicker belongs to a suitable route for hard materials. Always check the actual material and the finish; the shape of the weave alone is insufficient.
Can I clean natural rattan in the same way?
For natural rattan, follow the furniture manufacturer's instructions. The described treatment for synthetic wicker is not general advice for it. If material details are missing, inquire first about what the chair is made of.
How do I remove green deposits from a wicker chair?
Check the type of wicker and choose a cleaner suitable for that soiling and finish. Test first, use a soft approved tool, and rinse according to the label. For persistent spots, ask for advice before using another product.
Can I clean rope with green soap or vinegar?
Use only products that match the maintenance instructions of your furniture. For the Golden Care Fabric route, follow the bottle label itself. Do not add household products to the cleaner and do not apply a recipe for synthetic wicker to rope.
Can I use a pressure washer?
For the described maintenance route, use the approved soft tool and water according to the product instructions. A pressure washer is not part of this. For a different method, first check the advice of the furniture manufacturer.
Should rope be wet or dry when using a protector?
For Golden Care Fabric Protector, the material must be clean and completely dry. The cleaning step actually begins with dampening according to the Cleaner instructions. Therefore, plan the drying step between the two treatments.
What should I do with a loose or broken wicker strand?
Ask the furniture supplier for repair advice. A cleaner or protector does not repair the strand. Do not pull on it extra during cleaning and indicate where the damage is using photos.
How often should I maintain the weave?
Check the chair during use and during seasonal maintenance. Remove dirt when necessary and follow the instructions of the chosen product for re-protecting. Location, exposure, and usage help determine how much attention the furniture requires.
