Cleaning teak: step-by-step guide for tables and garden furniture

3 July 2026·8 min read·Garden Furniture Care

To clean teak, first dampen the wood, apply a suitable teak cleaner, clean in the direction of the wood grain, and rinse thoroughly. Then allow the wood to dry completely. The next step depends on your preference: a natural grey appearance, a chosen wood colour, or extra water- and dirt-repellent protection.

You often see it when the sun shines on the patio again: the garden table has turned grey, dirt is trapped between the slats, and a green haze appears on the shaded side. Start by checking what is on the wood. Dirt, greying, and old treatments all require attention. With the step-by-step guide below, you can work steadily from preparation to cleaning and assessment.

First check your teak and any previous treatment

Check whether your furniture is made of untreated teak or has previously been oiled, coloured, or treated with another product. Also check the furniture manufacturer's maintenance instructions. For lacquered parts, an unknown coating, or a damaged finish, it is wise to seek specific advice first. A cleaner is intended for cleaning; a loose joint or damage requires a different solution.

Look separately at the tabletop, the base, and the chairs. A tabletop that is used often may be dirtier than the underside. When assessing a chair, also include the slats, armrests, and joints. This way you will not miss any dirt edges and can divide the work into manageable parts.

What you need to prepare

  • Golden Care Teak Cleaner, with the product label handy.
  • A green scrubbing pad suitable for this cleaning and a cloth or sponge for application.
  • Clean water and a garden hose or watering can for dampening and rinsing.
  • Protective gloves, eye protection, and workspace covering, as prescribed by the product instructions.

Remove the cushions from the set and put away loose accessories. Protect the ground and prevent the product from coming into contact with other surfaces. Test the treatment on an inconspicuous part and assess the result. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area and choose conditions in which you can complete the prescribed cleaning and drying time.

Cleaning teak in six steps

1. Dampen the wood

The Dutch instructions for Golden Care Teak Cleaner begin with dampening the furniture with water. Take the parts you are going to clean with you. This is the preparation for this specific cleaner; do not automatically use this method for another bottle or an unknown finish.

2. Shake the bottle and apply the cleaner

Shake the Teak Cleaner before use. Apply the product with a cloth or sponge to the prepared wood, according to the instructions on the bottle. Work systematically over an accessible part of the table or chair. Do not mix the cleaner with household cleaning products and do not add your own recipe to the treatment.

3. Observe the working time

The Dutch Golden Care instructions in the material training mention three minutes of working time. Use the time on your own packaging if it differs. More dirt does not mean you should leave the cleaner on indefinitely. Assess any repetition according to the product advice.

4. Clean in the direction of the wood grain

Brush the furniture clean according to this instruction with a suitable soft scrubbing pad, in the direction of the grain. Distribute your attention over the surface instead of working extra hard on one spot repeatedly. For slats and edges, see how you can use the tool without treating other materials.

5. Rinse thoroughly

Rinse the treated wood thoroughly with clean water. Also pay attention to joints, edges, and openings where cleaner and loosened dirt can remain. Use a garden hose or watering can for this step-by-step guide. Check the result before deciding to clean again or take another step.

6. Let the teak dry completely

You only apply a colour protector or Shield to the surface once it is completely dry, as prescribed by the chosen product. For the Golden Care route, this means clean, completely dry, smooth, and dust-free wood. The drying time also depends on the conditions. Only a dry-feeling piece on the tabletop is no reason to skip the rest of the furniture.

Therefore, plan cleaning and protecting as two consecutive tasks with sufficient drying time in between. In the maintenance guide for teak garden furniture, you can see the complete process. This blog mainly helps with the execution of the cleaning.

Recognising green deposits on teak and grey wood

Removing green deposits

If the shaded side especially has a green haze, look at the cleaning of those parts extra carefully. Use a product that suits the teak, the dirt, and the possible previous finish. Start with the prescribed treatment and assess the result. Do not simply switch to a stronger product or a different concentration if the deposits persist.

A chair with many slats requires more attention to accessible corners than a flat tabletop. Remove loose leaves and dirt promptly and check where the furniture often remains damp. For choosing a route for different materials, you can also look at removing green deposits on garden furniture.

Cleaning and refreshing grey teak

A grey colour and a dirty table are not the same. Naturally greyed teak can be the appearance you like. Therefore, decide beforehand whether you only want to get the wood clean or also give it another colour. This prevents you from working towards a result while cleaning that you are not actually looking for.

Golden Care describes Teak Cleaner as a cleaner and colour restorer. How your own wood turns out, you assess after the treatment and drying. Do not expect an identical result with every old piece of furniture. If the surface remains rough or you see residues of a previous finish, check the furniture advice before you start sanding. A fixed grit size is not a general recipe for every teak piece of furniture.

After cleaning: choose a colour or protect transparently

If you want to maintain a honey-brown appearance, look at Teak Protector Honey Brown. Before a colour treatment, make a test on your own prepared wood: the base and previous finish influence the appearance. For a transparent water- and dirt-repellent treatment, there is Teak Shield, even when you want to maintain a natural patina-grey appearance.

Cleaner, Colour Protector, and Shield each have their own task. The right choice therefore goes beyond just the name teak protector. If you want to combine the products, follow the prescribed order and drying times. In Teak Protector or Teak Shield: which one do you need?, we explain the difference and the combination.

Frequently asked questions about cleaning teak

Can I clean teak with green soap, soda, or vinegar?

For the Golden Care route, follow the instructions of Teak Cleaner. That does not include a homemade mixture of green soap, soda, or vinegar. Use another product only if the furniture manufacturer prescribes it for your finish. Do not mix products and check an existing treatment before switching.

Can I use a pressure washer on my teak garden table?

The described Golden Care method uses water, a cloth or sponge, and a suitable pad. A pressure washer does not belong to that instruction. For this route, choose a garden hose or watering can and follow the furniture maintenance advice first for deviating cleaning.

How often do I need to clean teak garden furniture?

Check the set at the start of the season, during use, and before longer storage. Clean when dirt or deposits and the chosen follow-up treatment make it necessary. Location, use, and previous finish count; a heavy cleaning is not an automatic obligation for every check.

Should I clean teak first or sand first?

With this maintenance route, you start with assessing and cleaning. Determine after drying whether sanding is necessary and allowed for the wood and the next treatment. Do not use sanding as a replacement for establishing an old coating or damage.

How do I make a greyed teak table brown again?

Start with suitable cleaning and let the wood dry. Then assess the result and choose, if that is your desired appearance, a suitable Colour Protector. Test the colour on a small part. Another finish or previous oil treatment may require extra preparation.

Can I apply Teak Protector directly to an oiled table?

Do not apply the Colour Protector directly to oiled teak. First determine what preparation is necessary and follow the product advice for cleaning and removing the previous treatment. If in doubt, ask advice with a photo and the name of the oil used.

How long does a cleaning take?

That depends on size, accessibility, and dirt. The three minutes from the Dutch Cleaner instructions are the working time of that step. The time for preparing, cleaning, rinsing, drying, and a possible protective treatment is added to that.
