Cleaning garden cushions starts with the cover's care label and the advice for the filling. Remove loose dirt, blot fresh stains, choose an approved cleaning method and let the entire cushion dry completely. A removable cover may not automatically go in the washing machine and a water-repellent cushion is not automatically waterproof.
A coffee stain after breakfast, sunscreen on the armrest or grey patches after a damp period: outdoor cushions get dirty in different ways. You do not always have to wash the entire cover immediately. By first looking at the fabric, the stain and the construction, you choose a treatment that suits your cushion.
The cover, filling and fabric each have their own care advice
Look for the label and information from the furniture or fabric manufacturer. Look at the approved cleaning method, temperature, drying method and products. A cushion is a combination of parts. What is suitable for the outdoor fabric may not be permitted for a lining, seam or filling.
A zipper indicates that a cover can be removed. It does not tell you if you may wash the cover or how to reattach it. Sunbrella, for example, advises also consulting the furniture manufacturer for removable covers, because the cushion construction can differ. Therefore, do not adopt a general washing program based solely on a brand name or the appearance of the fabric.
If you no longer have a label, search for the model and supplier. Take a photo of the cushion and the fabric and ask what advice applies to the specific version. In case of uncertainty, do not start with a full wash or by soaking the filling. A small test with an approved product remains part of the preparation even afterwards.

Clean garden cushions in five clear steps
1. Remove loose dirt and blot spilled drinks
Remove leaves and crumbs. Carefully remove surface dirt with a soft tool that suits the fabric. Blot fresh liquid with a clean, absorbent cloth. Rubbing hard spreads a stain and is no substitute for proper cleaning. For oily or coloured stains, first check the fabric manufacturer's specific stain advice.
2. Choose spot cleaning, hand washing or machine washing
A loose stain can sometimes be addressed with an approved spot treatment. For dirt over the entire seat, a uniform cleaning of that surface is often the clearer route. For Sunbrella upholstery, the manufacturer recommends cleaning from seam to seam to limit rings and residue. Only apply such advice if it suits your fabric and cushion.
If the cover may go in the machine, follow its own program, temperature and drying advice. Also check if the cover may be removed and what the advice is for zippers. The filling only goes in if this is expressly permitted. Putting a heavy, wet cushion in a machine is not a general alternative to cleaning it on the furniture.
3. Use Fabric Cleaner according to the bottle instructions
For suitable outdoor textiles, the Dutch Golden Care instructions first describe a colorfastness test. Then moisten the fabric to be treated and spray the ready-to-use Fabric Cleaner 750 ml on the wet surface. The training states, depending on the soiling, three to ten minutes of contact time. Follow the precise instructions on your own bottle.
Carefully remove the dirt with the approved soft tool and rinse the treated surface thoroughly with clean water. For delicate upholstery, the textile advice takes precedence over a general choice of a sponge or brush. Repeat a treatment only according to the label. More product, harder scrubbing or mixing yourself is not a better next step.
The Fabric Care Kit combines Fabric Cleaner and Fabric Protector, both 750 ml, with the corresponding tools. View the contents and current availability on the product page. You use the two bottles one after the other, with complete drying between cleaning and protecting.
4. Rinse thoroughly and let everything dry
Finish the cleaning according to the product instructions. Give both fabric and filling the opportunity to dry and follow the cushion's drying advice. Also check the underside, seams and thick parts. A dry exterior can hide that the filling is still damp. Do not store the cushion enclosed at that moment.
5. Assess the clean fabric before a protection step
After drying, check if the stain is gone and if the fabric is uniformly clean. A remaining ring, color difference or musty smell first requires assessment. Do not automatically apply a protector over it. If the fabric is ready for an approved protection treatment, prepare it as a separate step.
Coffee, sunscreen, rings and the weather in garden cushions
A fresh stain from food or drink
Start by blotting the stain and then determine the correct cleaning. For a stubborn spot, note what was spilled. A grease stain may require a different product-specific treatment than a dried water ring. With that information, the supplier can advise more specifically than with just the report that the cushion is dirty.
A ring after cleaning
If the fabric is clean but you see a border, check if there may still be cleaning residues present and what the manufacturer prescribes for the entire surface. Follow the advice for careful rinsing and uniform cleaning. Do not exclusively treat the middle again and again. Test the approach and let the result dry before deciding further.
The weather, black dots or a musty smell
When people talk about the weather in garden cushions, they often mean dark dots, mold-like patches or a musty smell. Look where they are: on the cover, in the seams or also in the filling. Check if the cushion has remained damp for a long time. Treating only the visible fabric does not automatically solve a problem in the filling.
For such spots, use the advice that explicitly belongs to the fabric and the cushion. Some fabrics have their own instructions for mold stains, but a bleach recipe for one brand is not a general advice for all garden cushions. Do not mix cleaning products. If the damage or smell keeps returning, ask the supplier or professional cleaning if a replacement of a part is necessary.
Treating garden cushions with protector: first clean and completely dry
Treating with protector is a protection step. The Fabric Protector 750 ml from Golden Care makes suitable textiles water- and dirt-repellent and helps prevent stains. Check if this treatment suits the fabric and the existing finish. Perform a test again for the protector on an inconspicuous spot.
Clean soiled textiles first and let them dry completely. Shake the Protector and apply it according to your bottle label. The Dutch training describes uniform spraying; you take the quantity and method from your own packaging. Let the treatment dry completely afterwards before using or storing the cushion.
Treating with water repellency does not make a cushion waterproof and gives no guarantee that every stain will disappear or stay away. The need to treat again depends on use, cleaning and exposure. Adhere to the care advice of the fabric and the product. A new layer is not necessary just because another calendar month has passed.
Letting clean outdoor cushions dry properly and storing them
For longer storage, choose a dry place that suits the cushion advice. Also check the storage bag or cushion box: what is it intended for, can moisture get in and does the contents stay dry? A storage product does not change a wet cushion into a dry cushion. Therefore, only put completely dry cushions in it and check them occasionally during storage.
All-weather does not mean that every cushion can lie in a closed box through a whole wet winter without problems. The fabric and the filling together have a care and drying advice. Make your choice based on that. Also take the garden set with you during the seasonal change with our checklist for making garden furniture winter-ready.
Frequently asked questions about cleaning outdoor cushions
Can garden cushions go in the washing machine?
Only if the manufacturer allows it for the relevant part. Check the cover and filling separately. Removable is no proof that machine washing is allowed. Follow the own wash label for temperature, program and drying.
How do I clean garden cushions without a removable cover?
Follow the instructions for upholstery that stay on the cushion or furniture. Check the fabric, test a suitable product and take the filling into account. The Golden Care Fabric route describes moistening, cleaning, rinsing and completely drying for suitable textiles.
Can I clean garden cushions with green soap, soda or vinegar?
Only use products that the manufacturer prescribes for your fabric and cushion. For the described Golden Care treatment, follow the bottle label. Do not use your own mixture besides the cleaner and do not assume a recipe for another type of upholstery.
How do I get the weather or mold patches out of garden cushions?
Check the fabric and ask about the specific stain treatment. Also assess the filling and the cause of the moisture. There is no bleach recipe that is suitable for every cover, seam and filling. Ask the supplier for advice on recurring spots or smells.
Can I treat a wet cushion with protector?
The Golden Care Protector belongs on clean, completely dry fabric. First finish the cleaning and drying. Let the protection treatment also dry completely afterwards according to the label.
How long do garden cushions need to dry?
That depends on fabric, filling, amount of moisture and circumstances. Use the drying advice of your cushion and also check thick parts and the underside. A fixed drying time for every outdoor cushion would ignore those differences.
Does a textile protector make the cushions waterproof?
No. The mentioned Golden Care treatment makes suitable textiles water- and dirt-repellent. Continue to follow the advice for rain, drying and storing your cushion.
