Maintaining aluminum and plastic garden furniture

A clean frame, a fresh plastic chair and suitable protection: these four steps will help you keep maintenance manageable. First, check the material and finish, clean carefully, and only apply protection once everything is clean and dry.

Step 1

Check which material you are treating

Powder-coated aluminium has a applied finish. A plastic shell chair, woven plastic wicker, and a Polywood top may each have different maintenance advice. Therefore, first look up the material and finish in your furniture's information.

Does your chair have an aluminium frame with rope and loose cushions? Treat each part separately. For the soft parts, go to the advice for garden cushions and textiles. For plastic wicker, you will find more explanation under rope and wicker.

Before every treatment, first perform a test on a small, inconspicuous area. Also, assess the result there after drying.

Step 2

Clean carefully and rinse well

Remove cushions, clear away loose dirt, and cover the work area. Wear household gloves. For suitable powder-coated aluminum and plastic, you can use Golden Care Multi Surface Cleaner. Apply the ready-to-use cleaner directly.

The Dutch Golden Care training recommends a three-minute contact time. Afterwards, clean carefully with a soft sponge or cloth and rinse with clean water. Repeat if necessary. For deviating instructions, follow the label on your bottle and take the furniture's finish into account.

Do not use abrasive pads or steel wool on delicate coatings. If white or dull spots remain visible, or if the coating begins to peel, stop scrubbing more intensively and ask the furniture supplier for advice. A protector is not a product for repairing coatings.

Step 3

Protect a clean and dry surface

Allow the furniture to dry completely after cleaning. Then, choose the protector that is suitable for both the material and the finish. For suitable hard materials, including synthetic material and aluminium, there is Multi Surface Protector 750 ml, available separately or in the Multi Surface Care Kit. Spray according to the label, distribute with a clean cloth, and allow to dry thoroughly before use.

For powder-coated aluminium, there is also Aluminium Protector 500 ml. This is a separate product with its own instructions for use. Do not automatically apply the dosage, contact time, or drying time of another Protector.

Use the products outdoors or in a well-ventilated area and protect adjacent parts from splashes. Check the current availability on the product page.

Step 4

Keep maintenance small and manageable

Check the furniture regularly for dirt and stains. Clean as needed and read the label again before applying a new protective treatment. How often a treatment is needed depends on use, location, and the chosen product.

Store maintenance products tightly closed and frost-free. For a next round, you can choose a cleaner and protector separately or take a look at the Multi Surface Care Kit. A protector supports maintenance; damage to the furniture requires separate advice.

Follow this sequence: check the material, test, clean, rinse, dry, and then protect if necessary.

Frequently asked questions about aluminium and plastic

Which cleaner should I use for aluminium and plastic?+

For suitable powder-coated aluminium and plastic, Golden Care recommends the Multi Surface Cleaner. Check the finish, test first, and follow the instructions on the bottle.

Does a protector remove white oxidation or damaged coating?+

A protector is a maintenance product for protection. It does not repair peeling coating. Clean carefully; if spots remain visible, ask the furniture supplier for advice.

Can I also use this on white or black aluminum?+

Check whether the powder coating and furniture advice allow for the treatment. Test in an inconspicuous area and assess the result after drying. The color alone does not determine which agent is suitable.

Is a plastic chair the same as Polywood or rope?+

No. Look at the actual type of material. Rope and cushions follow the textile route; for HPL and Polywood, a specific protector may be appropriate. Use a product only if the label and the furniture advice allow it.

How long does a protector need to dry?+

Follow the label on the chosen bottle. The Multi Surface Protector 750 ml and Aluminium Protector 500 ml are separate items; instructions for use and drying times are not automatically the same.

How often should I clean and protect?+

Clean if the surface is dirty. Let the need for a new protective treatment depend on use, location and the instructions on your bottle.
