Cleaning aluminum and synthetic garden furniture should be done with a product that suits the surface and finish. Remove loose dirt, test the cleaner, treat with a gentle, approved tool, and rinse thoroughly. Allow the surface to dry completely before applying a suitable protector. Inspect white, dull, or damaged areas carefully before performing more intensive cleaning.
One garden chair might have a smooth synthetic shell, while another features an aluminum frame with a matte coating. Both feel like a hard surface, but the finish partially determines how you should maintain them. In this blog, you will read how to structure a cleaning session, what to do about stains, and when a spot requires different advice.
Start with the finish of your chair or garden set
Check the product details to see if your furniture has aluminum, powder-coated aluminum, or synthetic parts. Look at the coating and the original surface: matte, glossy, smooth, or textured. This will help you recognize changes. A white haze on a dark coating and a stain on a white synthetic seat may have different origins.
Also check the maintenance prescribed by the manufacturer for your model. If the finish is unclear, if a treatment was applied previously, or if the coating is peeling, a specific assessment is wise. A cleaner has a function for dirt and stains; it does not repair missing patches of coating.
Examine a composite garden set piece by piece. For example, an aluminum chair might have teak armrests, a rope seat, and separate cushions. For wickerwork, read cleaning rope and wicker. For the table, the routine for ceramic and HPL may apply.
Prepare the right tools
Start with clean water, clean soft cloths, and the tool permitted by the furniture and product instructions. A soft sponge can be convenient for accessible surfaces. For edges and joints, choose an appropriate tool without unnecessarily stressing the coating or synthetic material. Do not treat an unknown surface with an abrasive pad immediately.
- A Multi Surface Cleaner suitable for your surface.
- Clean water and sufficient clean cloths to keep cleaning and finishing separate.
- A soft sponge or other tool permitted by the furniture manufacturer.
- Coverage for the workspace and the personal protection prescribed by the bottle.
- For a follow-up step: a suitable protector with its own application instructions.
Remove the cushions from the set and put away loose accessories. Also protect adjacent wood and textiles from overspray. Test the chosen product on an inconspicuous area before treating the entire chair. This allows you to evaluate the result on the specific color and finish.
Cleaning aluminum and synthetic material in five steps
1. Remove loose dirt and inspect the surface
Carefully remove leaves, crumbs, and surface dirt. Check along armrests, legs, and joints where dirt accumulates. During this round, also check the coating and synthetic parts for damage. If necessary, photograph an unknown spot before starting; this will make it easier to judge what has changed after cleaning.
2. Check the application and apply the cleaner
The Golden Care training mentions Multi Surface Cleaner for, among other things, powder-coated aluminum, synthetic material, polyester, and polyethylene. Check the application on your specific bottle and for your furniture. The described cleaner is ready-to-use and may be applied directly according to the instructions. Work on one section that you can easily clean and rinse.
3. Observe the dwell time and clean carefully
The Multi Surface Cleaner instructions mention a three-minute dwell time. Afterward, remove the dirt with a suitable soft tool. On a vulnerable coating, use the method permitted by the furniture advice. A spot that remains requires assessment first; using more force or a significantly longer dwell time is not a self-evident solution.
4. Rinse the treated material thoroughly
Rinse the surface with clean water as prescribed by the product instructions. Also include edges and joints where loosened dirt or cleaner might remain. When working on a table with different materials, work in such a way that you can finish each part according to its own maintenance routine.
5. Allow to dry and check the result
Let the cleaning finish carefully and allow the surface to dry completely before using a protector. Re-examine the original spot. Is it gone, is there a rim still visible, or does the material itself appear changed? Only repeat a treatment that is suitable according to the label. In case of doubt about the finish, it is better to ask for specific advice.

What do you do with white deposits, a dull spot, or discoloration?
A white haze on aluminum or the coating
First include the spot in a suitable, gentle cleaning and evaluate the dry result. A white spot can have various causes. The color alone provides insufficient information to choose a treatment for limescale, metal, or coating. Therefore, do not immediately start working with a descaler, metal polish, or abrasive.
If the haze remains, provide the supplier with a photo and the furniture's details. Explain where it is located, when the spot became visible, and which products have already been used. If you see bubbles or peeling coating at the same time, have the finish assessed before treating it further.
Brown or dark spots on white synthetic chairs
On a light-colored chair, dirt is often clearly visible. Check whether the spot is superficial and whether you know what landed on it. Clean according to the appropriate route and rinse afterward. A deposit on the outside and a lasting change in the synthetic material are different situations. Only use a protector after you have assessed the clean chair.
A dull or discolored surface
Compare the spot with the furniture's original appearance. Was the synthetic material or the coating already matte? Is the difference localized or visible across the entire surface? Do not promise yourself a shine restoration with a random product. First, have it determined whether it involves dirt, cleaning residues, signs of wear, or a change in the finish.
For green deposits, also check the material suitability of the agent. Use the route for removing green deposits on garden furniture to make your choice. Do not automatically apply a treatment for a patio or driveway to a synthetic chair or a coated frame.
Choose the protector to match the material and bottle
Golden Care distinguishes between cleaning and protecting. A suitable protector helps care for a clean surface; it is not meant to polish away left-behind dirt. Therefore, complete the cleaning first, let the material dry completely, and test the protective treatment separately as well.
Powder-coated aluminum
The Aluminium Protector 500 ml in the range is intended for powder-coated aluminum according to the product label. Check whether that corresponds to your frame. Check the current availability on the product page. Follow the application, finishing, and drying time instructions on that specific packaging.
Do not use the name "aluminum" as a reason to apply a treatment to every metal. Stainless steel, a different coating, or an untreated metal part may have its own regulations. For an unknown version, request the material data first.
Synthetic material and other suitable hard surfaces
For suitable hard materials, you can also choose Multi Surface Protector 750 ml. If you want to combine cleaning and protecting, there is the Multi Surface Care Kit with Cleaner and Protector. Follow the instructions on the bottles from that kit. The current manufacturer FAQ describes the Protector as a protective step that repels dirt and makes later cleaning easier.
Apply evenly and finish according to the label. Avoid overspray on other materials and give the treatment the necessary drying time. Do not adopt the dwell time of a cleaner or the drying time of another protector as a general rule for all maintenance products.
Keep the set cared for between cleanings
Regularly remove leaves and other loose dirt, and address spilled drinks or food residues promptly according to the furniture advice. During your next maintenance turn, also include spots you do not see immediately: under the tabletop, around fasteners, and at the connections of different materials.
Decide whether to leave it outside, cover it, or store it indoors based on the complete set. A material name or an applied protective layer does not provide all the information regarding winter storage. Ensure you put away parts clean and dry and check them during longer storage. The checklist preparing garden furniture for winter helps with that preparation.
Frequently asked questions about cleaning aluminum and synthetic furniture
Can I clean aluminum and synthetic material with the same cleaner?
Some cleaners are suitable for both materials. Golden Care mentions various hard outdoor materials for the Multi Surface Cleaner. Even so, check the specific product, the coating, and the furniture advice, and perform a test first.
How do I get white synthetic garden chairs clean again?
Remove loose dirt, test a suitable cleaner, and treat carefully according to the instructions. Rinse thoroughly and evaluate the dry result. Ask for advice in case of persistent discoloration; not every change is dirt on the surface.
What do I do with white spots on an aluminum frame?
Start with an allowed, gentle cleaning and then inspect the dry surface. Do not immediately use a descaler or polish on an unknown coating. Have persistent spots or peeling finish assessed by the furniture supplier.
Can I use vinegar, baking soda, or a scouring sponge?
Use only agents and tools permitted for your material and finish. For the described Multi Surface route, follow the bottle label. Do not add household products, and do not use an abrasive pad as a general solution for a stubborn spot.
Should I polish powder-coated aluminum?
First check if that is permitted for that coating. Do not choose a metal polish just because the frame is aluminum. For a matte or damaged coating, ask for appropriate maintenance or repair advice.
Can a protector repair a damaged coating?
A maintenance protector is not a repair agent for missing or peeling coating. Have the damage assessed before applying a protective treatment.
How long should the cleaner dwell?
The Golden Care Multi Surface Cleaner instructions mention three minutes. Follow the directions on your own packaging. That time does not automatically apply to another cleaner or a protector.
How often should I clean the garden set?
Check the set during use and during the seasonal maintenance. Clean if the surface is dirty or stained, and follow the specific product instructions for protection. Usage, location, and exposure determine how much maintenance is needed.
Are you unsure which coating is on your frame or what is causing a white spot? Provide the brand, model, photos, and the products already used via contact and personal advice. For the rest of the set, you will find the routes in the selection guide for garden furniture maintenance.
