A black wooden table or bench calls for a clear choice of colour. Golden Care Protector Charcoal is the black colour option for teak and hardwood. Choose this variant if you want to give the wood a black finish. The bottle contains 1000 ml. Testing it on clean, dry wood will help you decide whether the shade suits your furniture and the rest of your garden set.

Charcoal is the black colour option

Golden Care describes Charcoal as a colour protector that turns hardwood black. This variant is therefore different from the dark brown Vintage and the coffee-to-black-brown Wengé. So when choosing, look beyond the word “dark”. The shade you want determines which bottle to use for maintenance.

Assess the test patch in daylight and let it dry before making a decision. An existing colour treatment or an unevenly weathered surface needs attention during preparation. If you test on a piece that is uncleaned or still damp, you are assessing a different situation from the surface you will treat according to the instructions.

Start with clean, dry wood

First, check how the furniture was previously treated. Do not apply Golden Care Colour Protector directly over a layer of oil. First clean weathered or previously oiled teak with Teak Cleaner according to the instructions. Rinse off the cleaner and let the wood dry completely. For new teak, follow the prescribed preparation as well; new wood is not automatically ready for a colour treatment.

Golden Care specifies completely dry, dust-free wood as the starting point. If necessary, prepare a rough surface in accordance with the product and furniture instructions, then remove the dust. Protect the work area and wear the gloves and eye protection specified on the label. Then test the colour on a small, inconspicuous area.

Apply thin coats carefully

Shake the bottle thoroughly for at least one minute. Apply Charcoal in a thin, even coat with a soft, lint-free cloth. The Dutch Golden Care instructions specify a second thin coat of this variant after 30 minutes. If the instructions differ, follow the label on your bottle. Carefully spread the treatment over the wooden parts you are treating according to the instructions.

Allow time for the furniture to dry as well as time for application. Follow the specified drying time before using it again, exposing it to the weather outdoors or carrying out a subsequent step. The drying time between coats and the waiting time before applying another product are separate intervals; check both on the bottle.

Decide in advance which parts you will colour

If you have a complete set, inspect the table, armrests and other wooden parts separately. They may have been maintained differently in the past. Check the existing finish and follow the advice for the furniture. Choosing a dark colour is no reason to skip cleaning or testing a small area.

If you want to take a different approach to the colour later, first determine what treatment is on the wood and what preparation is needed. You cannot establish this based solely on the name of the current colour. If in doubt, ask for advice before applying a new colour over an existing finish.

Colour maintenance and an optional Shield step

For this combination, Golden Care recommends applying the Colour Protector first, followed by Teak Shield. Allow the colour treatment to dry for 24 hours, in accordance with the latest manufacturer information, before applying Shield. Also check the instructions on both bottles. Shield provides the transparent water- and dirt-repellent step; it does not replace choosing and preparing the colour.

Golden Care recommends treating the wood at least once a year to maintain its colour. In the meantime, assess the condition of the wood and, when repeating the treatment, follow the preparation steps and bottle instructions again. For the complete sequence, read the teak maintenance guide; it explains how cleaning, colouring and the optional transparent treatment fit together.
