A teak table can retain its natural character and still receive a protective treatment. Golden Care Teak Shield is a transparent, invisible treatment for teak and hardwood. It makes the surface water- and dirt-repellent and helps prevent stains. The bottle contains 1000 ml. Shield also suits the natural patina-grey appearance of wood.
The transparent step in teak care
Golden Care describes Shield as a transparent water- and dirt-repellent treatment. Choose it when that function suits your maintenance goal. The product helps prevent stains; continue caring for the furniture and assess the condition of the surface during use. For a brown, blonde or other colour, there is the Colour Protector range.
If you want to combine both functions, Golden Care recommends applying the Colour Protector first and Shield afterwards. For example, with Honey Brown, apply the colour step first. This distinction helps you determine which preparation, bottle and drying time apply to each part of the maintenance routine.
Preserving the existing patina-grey appearance
Before cleaning, decide whether you want to preserve the existing patina-grey appearance. For this finish, the Dutch Shield instructions recommend applying the product with a dabbing motion. Rubbing can affect the existing weathered appearance. Intensive cleaning or sanding is therefore something to consider beforehand as well.
To prepare the wood, Golden Care refers to the corresponding cleaning process using Teak Cleaner. Follow the instructions for your wood and its previous treatment. If you are unsure whether the surface has been treated with oil, varnish or a coating, ask for advice first. Let the wood dry completely before applying Shield, and ensure the surface meets the conditions described on the label.
Apply a thin coat with a soft cloth
Protect the work area and wear the gloves and eye protection specified on the label. Shake the bottle for at least one minute and use a soft, lint-free cloth. Apply a thin coat to the prepared wood. Test on an inconspicuous area first, and if the surface has a patina-grey finish, use the recommended dabbing technique.
The Dutch instructions provided recommend applying a second thin coat after one hour. They then specify a 48-hour wait before exposing the treated wood to the weather. Check the label on your bottle and follow it if the instructions differ. Allow enough time for both coats and for the treatment to dry.
Combining it with a Colour Protector
When combining products, apply Colour Protector first and Shield afterwards. Current Golden Care manufacturer information specifies a 24-hour drying time after the colour treatment before applying Shield. This waiting period is for the transition between the two products. It is separate from Shield’s own application and drying times.
So read both product labels when planning multiple steps. The difference between Teak Protector and Teak Shield explains the role of each product. This page also features a Shield instruction video, so you can watch the treatment before you begin. Use the video alongside the instructions on your packaging.
Maintain your furniture according to its condition
Golden Care recommends reapplying at least once a year. Tabletops may need attention more often. Before each maintenance treatment, assess the wood, any dirt and the previous treatment. Then follow the preparation instructions on the bottle again. Applying an extra coat to an unsuitable or dirty surface does not replace this preparation.
To plan the full process at your own pace, use the teak care step-by-step guide. It brings together choosing the finish, cleaning, letting the wood dry, and any Colour Protector and Shield steps. This helps you spread the work over the time your furniture needs, according to the instructions.
Looking to combine cleaning with transparent protection? The Wood Care Kit - Cleaner + Shield contains both products in 1000 ml bottles, along with the accessories you need.
