Would you like to give teak a deliberately darker, coffee-brown look? Teak Protector Wengé is Golden Care’s colour treatment for a coffee- to black-brown finish on teak and hardwood. The 1000 ml bottle is part of the Colour Protector range. Start by assessing the wood and making a colour test so you can see how the dark shade looks on your own furniture.

Wengé’s dark colour tone

Golden Care’s Dutch product information describes Wengé as coffee-brown to black-brown. This is a distinct colour tone within the range. Vintage is described as dark brown, while Charcoal is the black option. When comparing different dark shades, this distinction can help narrow down your choice before treating the wood.

A photo on a screen gives you an impression, while a test shows how Wengé looks on the surface you have chosen. Use a small, inconspicuous area and prepare it just as carefully as the entire piece of furniture. Let the test dry and assess it in daylight. If you are treating a set, also include any parts with a different previous finish in your assessment.

Start with clean, dry wood

First check how the furniture has been treated previously. Do not apply Golden Care Colour Protector directly over a layer of oil. If the teak is greyed or has previously been oiled, first clean it with Teak Cleaner according to the instructions. Rinse off the cleaner and let the wood dry completely. For new teak, follow the prescribed preparation as well; new wood is not automatically ready for a colour treatment.

Golden Care specifies completely dry, dust-free wood as the starting point. If necessary, prepare a rough surface in accordance with the product and furniture instructions, then remove the dust. Protect the work area and wear the gloves and eye protection specified on the label. Then test the colour on a small, inconspicuous area.

Apply thin coats with care

Shake the bottle thoroughly for at least one minute. Apply Wengé in a thin, even coat using a soft, lint-free cloth. For this variant, Golden Care’s Dutch instructions recommend applying a second thin coat after 30 minutes. If the instructions differ, follow the label on your bottle. Carefully spread the treatment over the wooden parts specified in the instructions.

Allow time for the furniture to dry after application. Observe the specified drying time before using it again, exposing it to the weather outdoors or carrying out a subsequent step. The drying time between coats and the waiting time before applying another product are separate intervals; check both on the bottle.

From choosing a colour to a practical maintenance session

Before cleaning, decide whether you want to give the entire set the same shade and which parts you want to treat. The wood’s current colour and previous finish are part of this preparation. Use Wengé on wood for which the Golden Care treatment and your furniture’s maintenance recommendations are suitable. If you are unsure whether the wood has a lacquer, oil or coating, first ask for advice on the correct preparation.

You do not need to apply a thick coat to achieve a dark finish. For this Colour Protector, Golden Care recommends building up thin, even coats. Follow this method and test the shade first. This way, you can base your colour choice on a controlled test and apply the product according to the instructions on the bottle.

Colour maintenance and a possible Shield step

For use in combination, Golden Care recommends applying the Colour Protector first, followed by Teak Shield. According to the manufacturer’s current information, let the colour treatment dry for 24 hours before applying Shield. Also check the instructions on both bottles. Shield provides a transparent water- and dirt-repellent layer; it does not replace choosing and preparing the colour.

For colour maintenance, Golden Care recommends at least one treatment per year. In between, assess the condition of the wood and, when repeating the treatment, follow the preparation steps and bottle instructions again. For the complete sequence, read the teak maintenance guide; it shows how cleaning, colouring and the optional transparent treatment work together.
